Getting Started

This blog will be a recording of the opinions of the Layman. Issues ranging from economics, politics, race relations in the United States, and lots of other things. However, I will try to remain unemotional so that my perceptions can be reasonably tested. Testing is exactly what I hope to provoke. I am an educator - or, at least, I want to be.
I've been working towards this goal for quite some time now. I wanted to be an English professor, at one time, so I earned  a master's degree in English/Pedagogy from Northern Michigan University. Changed my mind, though. I like teaching, but I really want to make a difference, improve the community. Liberating twenty-five minds at a time is just not enough. and that's assuming that it's possible to even get one started down the road to liberation. The liberated mind thinks critically, is not afraid to wonder outside of the box, listens to learn, and can articulate an understanding. Most noteworthy of the liberated mind is it does not choose to be adversarial. I hope, as I jot down a note, here and there, our minds become more liberated. Come, let us think together (I know, corny - but what's life without a little corn?).
One more thing, occasionally there will be excerpts from short stories intertwined in the more essay type stuff. I don't know how good it will be; I just like writing fiction. You'll be able to tell where it starts and it ends. I'll make the story in italics. I don't know when this will start. It may, and it may not.
This blog is serving as an act of discipline for me. I am a man with a great deal of talent and potential, but, lately, I lack discipline. My undergrad degree is in writing.
I guess I'm good at it. It's hard to say, but others say I'm pretty good. I have a love for the English language. The language describes what we think we need, who we think we are, and what we think others think of us or aught to think of us. The language makes us a people. This is not to say that our language is perfect. If our language were perfect, the people would be perfect. Even then, we must continue to strive to be perfect. Otherwise, there is no reason to continue living. It is not the people in need of repair, it is the language we use to describe reality.
But, at last, my hands hurt.
More next time.
